Nissequogue River State Park Activities

 

 

Environmental Interpretation
The park possesses a variety of habitats including tidal wetlands and forested areas.  There are significant plant and wildlife species that inhabit these areas.  Guided nature walks and environmental programs are available to families, children, adults, youth organizations and clubs.  For additional information contact the Environmental Office at (631) 581-1072.
 
Trail Activities
The Greenbelt Trail parallels the Nissequogue River through the park.  It is maintained through a cooperative agreement with the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference.  A greenway corridor has been identified that links Route 25 to the park along the eastern boundary.  The 1.5 mile Kings Park Hike and Bike Trail runs along the former railroad spur on the south side of the park.  The Hike and Bike Trail is maintained by the Smithtown Parks Department.  The trail currently runs from Old Dock Road (Behind St. Joseph's Church) to St. Johnland Rd.  Walking, running and biking are permitted.  The trail contains historic markers as well as park benches for rest.  Park roads can also be used for biking, running and walking.  Please use the proper safety equipment. 
 
Wildlife
The park is abundant with wildlife.  There are many opportunities for birdwatching in the park.  A birdwatching blind exists near the pond by the administration building.  A section of the park has been designated a State Bird Conservation Area.  The park is also abundant with other wildlife including shore birds and geese, fish, reptiles, amphibians and small mamals.  Please use respect while viewing.  Information on wildlife in the park can be found in the administration building.
 
Fishing
The shoreline at the Nissequogue River State Park provides an opportunity to allow full fishing access.
 
Photography
There are many photo opportunities for nature and architecture throughout the park.  Photographers should check in with the park office whenever possible.  It is Dangerous And Unlawful to enter any closed building or area closed to the public. All violaters will be Arrested And Prosecuted.
 
Boating/Canoeing/Kayaking
There are two marinas at the Nissequogue River State Park. Boat slips are by permit only.  Visit the park office for more information.   A  launch site is available for canoes and kayaks.
 
Winter Activities
Snowshoeing and X-Country skiing are permitted in the Nissequogue River State Park.
 
Picnic/Day Use
Informal day use activities can occur on the park property.  There is a small shaded area near the kayak and canoe launch site with picnic tables, grills, and trash and coal bins. 
 
Vistas
The top of the bluffs offer spectacular views of the Nissequogue River estuary and Long Island Sound while shoreline areas brings the patron closer to the tidal wetlands and the river system.
 
Museum/Visitors Center
A museum/visitors center is located in the park administration building.
 
Conference Room
A conference room in the administration building is available for rent.  Please contact the park office for rates.
 
Pets
There are no pets allowed in the park at this time.

Golden Park Program
Senior Citizens, persons 62 years of age or older who are New York State residents, can have unlimited weekday and non-holiday access to all state parks and discounts on certain fees by showing their New York State driver's license or New York State non-driver identification.
 
Access Pass
The Access Pass is available to New York State residents with qualifying disabilities.  The pass provides free or reduced entry and use of state parks and recreation areas and their facilities.  Not included are special events, programs, services and facilities provided by concessionaires and utilities for camping.  Applications are available by mail from Access Pass, New York State Parks, Albany, New York 12238. 
 
Empire Passport
The Empire Passport provides unlimited vehicle entry to most state park and recreation areas during the fiscal year, April 1 - March 31.  The pass does not cover activity fees.  Purchase can be made in person at certain parks (please call (631) 669-1000, ext. 223 for listing) or by mail from Passport, New York State Parks, Albany, New York 12238.
 
Camping Reservations
The Long Island Region has camping at Heckscher, Wildwood and Hither Hills State Parks.  Camping/cabin reservations may be made for New York State Parks and Environmental Conservation campgrounds that provide camping facilities by calling 1-800-456-CAMP.
